Medicare Supplement insurance, from the ground up
The one section to read before you compare premiums. How Medigap works, when to buy it, how it is priced, and what changes once a protected window closes.
What Medigap is
A private insurance policy that helps pay certain costs Original Medicare leaves to you, such as coinsurance and deductibles, depending on the plan letter.
When to buy it
The six-month Medigap Open Enrollment window begins when you are 65 or older and your Part B coverage starts. Policies are generally issued then without medical underwriting.
How it is priced
Insurers use community-rated, issue-age-rated, or attained-age-rated methods. The rating method affects how the premium behaves over time.
What it does not do
Medigap policies sold today do not include prescription drug coverage, and they do not cover things Medicare itself does not cover.
