Medigap vs Medicare Advantage
Two different approaches to receiving Medicare benefits. Neither is universally better — the right fit depends on your priorities, providers, budget, and travel. Here is how they generally differ.
Side by side
How the two approaches generally compare
| Topic | Original Medicare + Medigap | Medicare Advantage |
|---|---|---|
| Plan structure | You keep Original Medicare. A Medigap policy pays after Medicare on eligible costs. | A private plan delivers your Part A and Part B benefits, often bundling extras. |
| Provider / network | No network. Any provider nationwide that accepts Medicare assignment. | Usually an HMO or PPO network; out-of-network rules vary by plan. |
| Monthly premiums | Part B premium plus a Medigap premium (and typically a Part D premium). | Part B premium plus a plan premium that may be low or $0, depending on the plan. |
| Cost-sharing | Generally predictable: Plan G leaves the Part B deductible; Plan N adds small copays. | Copays and coinsurance per service, which vary by plan and provider. |
| Out-of-pocket exposure | Generally limited by the plan letter's design; Plans G and N have no annual out-of-pocket maximum because most costs are covered. | Plans set an annual out-of-pocket maximum for covered in-network services. |
| Referrals | Not required by the policy. | HMO plans often require referrals; PPO plans generally do not. |
| Travel | Coverage follows Original Medicare anywhere in the U.S.; some letters include limited foreign travel emergency benefits. | Emergency care is covered nationwide; routine care generally stays in-network. |
| Prescription drugs | Not included — typically paired with a separate Part D plan. | Often included (MAPD), though formularies vary. |
| Underwriting / enrollment | Protected during Medigap Open Enrollment and guaranteed issue situations; otherwise underwriting may apply. | Generally no health questions; enrollment limited to specific periods (IEP, AEP, OEP, SEPs). |
GSS focuses on Medicare Supplement education. We keep Medigap education separate from Medicare Advantage marketing, and we do not represent Medicare Advantage plans on this site. If Medicare Advantage is the better fit for you, we will say so.
