Turning 65: A Month-by-Month Timeline

What to do at six months, three months, and thirty days out.

About 9 minute read

Overview

At six months out, gather your prescription list, your doctors, and your travel patterns. Decide whether Original Medicare plus Medigap or a Medicare Advantage structure fits your life.

How it works

At three months out, your initial enrollment period opens. If you are not already receiving Social Security, you enroll in Parts A and B yourself.

What to watch for

At thirty days out, confirm your Part B effective date, compare Medigap premiums, and choose a Part D plan against your actual prescriptions.

What to do next

After your Part B start date, your six-month Medigap open enrollment window is running. Do not let it pass unused.
