How Medigap Premiums Are Rated

Attained age, issue age, and community rating.

About 9 minute read

Overview

Attained-age rating means the premium rises as you get older. It usually starts lowest and increases over time.

How it works

Issue-age rating sets the premium based on your age when the policy was issued, so it does not rise because of age alone.

What to watch for

Community rating charges the same premium to everyone in an area regardless of age.

What to do next

Every method is still subject to carrier rate increases. The rating method tells you the shape of the curve, not that the curve is flat.
